Private Pilot Rating

Tecnam P2008 Light Sport

It’s widely recognized that learning to become a pilot is expensive. While it will be well worth it in the end, it is important to be prepared financially before you begin your training!

Our PPL course will take you from zero flight time to licensed pilot in as little as 40 hours and we’ll familiarize you with several aircraft including both high and low wing aircraft utilizing our fleets modern avionics. Below are some helpful tips what to expect.

Projected Spending

(flying and other materials)

  • 40 - 65 hours of flight time (or more) in a Cessna 172 Skyhawk and/or Tecnam P-Mentor. An average aircraft hourly cost is between $200 and $240 dollars hourly.

  • Approximately 20 to 30 hours of flight instruction. The cost of one-on-one learning with your flight instructor is $65.00 hourly

  • Approximately 5 to 10 hours of ground instruction. The cost of one-on-one ground instruction with your flight instructor is $40.00 hourly

  • Students must also purchase necessary study material, training aids and an audio headset for use in the aircraft. Headsets may also be rented for $5.00 for each flight

Medical Exam

You may begin your flying with your flight instructor but before you can take your first solo flight, you’ll need to take a medical exam for your Third Class Medical (First or Second Class works too). The cost is approximately $160.00 for a third class medical certificate. Until you receive your PPL, your medical certificate IS your pilots license and must be with you at all times.

The FAA medical process is simple. Ask the school for a list of credentialed FAA Pilot Examiners; there are three on Oahu. You’ll usually be in and out in 15 to 20 minutes if you are under 40 years old, otherwise there is an added EKG that is required but even that just takes about 15 additional minutes. Expect a very thorough eye exam and to provide a urine sample which will be tested for proteins to ensure kidney health. The doctor-patient one-on-one is very straight forward.

Proctored Written Exam

You will be required to take a proctored exam for the rating you are seeking. The cost of an exam is $175.00. BPFS is an FAA Approved Testing Ceter
